Thailand is restructuring the Non-immigrant visa categories

Effective August 31, 2025, Thailand will streamline its Non-Immigrant visa system, reducing the number of categories from 17 to seven. This is expected to reduce complexity, eliminate overlapping classifications and speed up application processing for foreign nationals.

According to the officials, the restructuring does not change eligibility requirements or applicants’ rights. Instead, it combines existing visa types into broader categories to improve clarity and efficiency.

Under the new system, foreign nationals and businesses must apply under one of these categories: F (Official); B (Business), which combines the previous B, B-A, IM, IB and EX visas; ED (Education), merging ED, ED-A, R, R-A and RS; M (Mass Media); O (Others), combining O, O-A and O-X; L-A (Labour); and O L-A.

For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) operating in Thailand, the consolidation aims to make obtaining business visas easier. Instead of navigating multiple overlapping categories, companies can now submit applications under the B (Business) category for executives, investors and employees, streamlining entry and compliance.

Officials described the changes as administrative, not policy-driven, focusing on efficiency instead of new requirements. By eliminating duplication and consolidating categories, authorities hope to reduce confusion for foreign nationals and businesses wanting to operate in Thailand.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the update is part of ongoing efforts to make Thailand’s visa system more user-friendly while protecting applicants’ rights and safeguards.
